The desk's role and limits

Karat Arithmetic is an independent editorial desk. It is not a broker, not an exchange, not a licensed adviser, and it holds no client money. The desk does not sell gold, does not buy gold, and does not handle any reader's funds. Its only work is to take one measurement from named public sources and republish it with the date and the hour it was read.

Because the desk is not a market participant, it cannot quote a buy-back price, cannot execute an order, and cannot advise a reader on when to buy or sell. A reader who wants to transact must deal with a shop or a broker directly. The desk's role stops at the arithmetic: it shows what the published figures say, nothing more.

Rate source and time of reading

The measurement is the association's published rate for gold, taken before tax, with a final column that adds the three per cent a buyer pays. The desk does not create this figure. It reads it from the association's public page, under the table on this site, where the source is named and linked so a reader can check the figure at its publisher.

The desk records the date and the hour it read the source, because these rates move during the day. A figure read at ten in the morning may not match a figure read at four in the afternoon. By republishing the hour, the desk lets a reader know exactly when the measurement was taken, and that the figure is not a live price.

The editor and corrections

The editor is the person responsible for what the site states: for the accuracy of the republished figures, for the naming of sources, and for any correction that becomes necessary.
